Musk ox Safari

One of the most amazing experiences you can take part in at Dovregubbens Hall, is to join in on a musk ox safari. Our tour guide partner will bring you on a hike into Dovrefjell’s wonderful nature to show you the venerable musk oxen that we share the mountains with. A musk ox safari is a unique experience that you can only get here in Dovrefjell, and it is not to be missed.

On the hike you will need proper clothes for the weather, and a good pair of shoes for hiking. Be prepared for rough terrain, as there is no guarantee that the hike will follow trails from start to finish.

Musk ox safari begins at 09:20 every day, and must be booked at least one day in advance. You will need a car to get to the rendezvous point.

Contact us for booking.

Musk Oxen

The musk ox is an ancient animal, and while it is related to cows, it has more in common with goats. It has its own genus, whose name in latin simply means “sheep ox”. The musk ox has long, thick wool for protection against the elements of the cold tundra, and curved horns that it isn’t shy about using to defend itself. Behaviorally, the musk ox is fairly stoic, but it is also very strong, and has an impressive speed of up to 60 km/h. As long as you take the right precautions and keep a good distance (200m) from them, it is safe to seek out the animals and observe them. Don’t forget your binoculars!
