Hiking Trails

Going on hikes is an essential part of a holiday in the mountains, and from Dovregubbens Hall, you will find many hiking trails of varying intensity and landscape. Regardless of your level of experience and endurance, you should be able to find suitable trails for you and your party. Choose from trips that will take a few hours, to full day hikes that take you through several types of terrain. Some trails have forking or crossing paths, which give you the freedom to choose a longer or shorter hike underway.

Down below is a selection of our recommended hikes in the area, and we encourage you to bring out your map, so that you can follow the names of locations in our descriptions, and plot your route before departure. Note that the hiking routes we showcase here, are only a few of the many different routes you can take in Dovrefjell. We encourage you to use your map and plot your own routes among the trails in the area.

Mehøen Lap from Dovregubbens Hall

Just south of Dovregubbens Hall lies Mehøen mountain. Mehøen is one of the most popular peaks to scale in the area. One of the reasons for this is that the trail to the top is very forgiving, even for less experienced hikers. The Mehøen Lap takes you up to Glupsætre, further up the valley between Mehøen and Vålåsjøberget, and then around the southern end of the mountain and down the beautiful valley Gautdalen, which brings you back around north towards Dovregubbens Hall for your return. Along the lap you have opportunities to make deviations to scale both Vålåsjøberget, and Mehøen proper. From the top you will have a great view of the entire valley that leads further into Dovrefjell.

Lispynten

If you’d like a shorter hike that still provides enough elevation for a good view, Lispynten is an excellent alternative for a hike. Lispynten lies just north of Dovregubbens Hall, and with an even pace, the hike will take approximately two hours. Follow the road from Dovregubbens Hall until you’ve crossed the river and passed through the railroad underpass. From there, follow the road further until you see signs pointing to Lispynten, which mark the beginning of the trail. The trail first takes you up to, and past a pond. Then the trail forks, and you have the choice between continuing west, up to the top of Lispynten, or to follow the trail eastward down to Storsandviksætre. From the top of Lispynten, you will have a great view of Vålåsjøen lake, and Fokstumyra wetlands.

When you are ready to return back to Dovregubbens Hall, follow the cairns down to the road marked Lissæterveien, and follow it back to Dovregubbens Hall. If you want a slightly longer hike, we recommend taking the route east, down to Storsandviksætre before following the road from there back to Dovregubbens Hall.

Avsjøen Lap

The lap around Avsjøen is an excellent trip if you want a hike with good length, but not a lot of elevation. For the longest route, you can follow the road up towards Glupsætre, as you would for the Mehøen lap, but before you reach Glupsætre, you take the pilgrim path eastwards towards Avsjøsætre. Alternatively you can follow Anfinnsosen (the road on the south side of the E6) to Avsjøsætre - a shorter route than taking the pilgrim path. Once you get to Avsjøsætre, the path leads east along the south bank of Avsjøen to Sygardssætre. We recommend you cross the river via the bridge there. Once you’ve crossed the river, you can continue west, carefully cross the E6 and follow the road and path back to Dovregubbens Hall. Please respect the privacy of the properties in the trails’ proximity.
